Get Started: File the IRS form

To sign up for a 530A and the $1,000 government contribution if you qualify, your first step is to file a form with the IRS. This is technically called Form 4547. Before you start, you must make sure you are the right person to sign up on your child’s behalf. See more details here.

As of May 2026, the sign-up form on TrumpAccounts.gov is no longer available.

The website will send you to the IRS form in Option 1.

To use the online IRS form, you’ll need to log into the IRS website using ID.me. Once you’ve logged in to ID.me, the form should only take 3-5 minutes to complete

You’ll need:

  • Your contact information.
  • Your child’s Social Security Number.
  • Remember to select the option for the $1,000 contribution, also known as the Pilot Program contribution, if your child was born after January 1, 2025.

If you’ve already used ID.me to access an IRS online account or another government service, you’ll be able to use your existing account.

If not, you’ll have to verify your identity on ID.me and will need:

  • A smartphone or computer with a camera.
  • An email address.
  • A valid government-issued photo ID. The process involves uploading photos of your ID, taking a selfie, and entering personal details to verify your identity.

This might be a good option if:

  • You already filed your tax return, but you did not file Form 4547.
  • You are unable to file a federal tax return.
  • You don’t benefit from filing a federal return.

Most tax providers allow you to include the sign-up form as part of your regular tax return. If you haven’t filed a tax return yet, you may qualify for other tax benefits. Get free, trusted help at GetYourRefund.org. If you’ve filed your taxes already this year and didn’t submit the 530A form, you can still complete it on IRS.gov (see option 1 details). You can also wait until you file next year to open the account. If you wait, you may lose out on the interest you would have earned if you opened the account this year.

This might be a good option if:

  • You haven’t filed a federal tax return this year
  • You have earned income from a job

You can print out and mail Form 4547 to the IRS. Download the form here. Remember to check the box for the $1,000 contribution if your child was born after January 1, 2025, and remember to sign the form. Where you mail the form depends on where you live. You can find the appropriate mailing address here, using the column labeled “you are not enclosing a payment.” Paper forms may take longer to process than the other options. If you use this option, the IRS may send you follow up communications to verify your identity.

This might be a good option if:

  • You are unable to create or sign into your IRS account

Sign up deadline

There is no deadline to sign up for a 530A, or for the $1,000 contribution. The $1,000 contribution for newborns born 2025-2028 will remain available until the child turns 18.

Keep in mind that the longer you wait, the less interest the account will earn before your child turns 18.

Haven't filed your taxes? You might be leaving money on the table

You may want to file a tax return even if you did not work or earned very little income. Filing taxes may help your family access benefits, tax credits, and a 530A account.
